Haiti Earthquake Relief

The small island nation of Haiti was struck by a massive magnitude 7.0 earthquake on Tuesday, January 12th, 2010. The International Red Cross has stated that as many as 3 million people have been affected by the quake with thousands, if not tens of thousands or hundred of thousands, of lives lost. AikiWeb wishes to gather donations for those affected by the earthquake to send to the International Red Cross. Donations will be collected through January 31st, 2010 on this webpage. Please help out if you can. Every little bit helps. Thank you.

Seminar: Tamura Shihan, 8th Dan Aikikai, Edinburgh, Scotland 16-17th Oct

Edinburgh Aikido Club are delighted to welcome Tamura Sensei for his first aikido seminar in Scotland. The course times are Saturday (10-12, 3 - 5.30pm) Sunday (10 - 12). Tamura Sensei became an uchi-deshi at the Aikikai Hombu Dojo in 1953. He was a favourite uke of O’Sensei, accompanying him in many demonstrations including his well-known trip to Hawaii in 1961. In 1964, Tamura Sensei moved to Marseilles, France where he is now the technical director of the French FFAB Federation (Fédération Française d'Aïkido et de Budo). Tamura Sensei has had an enormous influence on the spread of aikido in Europe and gives seminars all over the world.

Aikido Kenkyukai International Australia/Fudoshin Dojo would like to share and help highlight the happy event celebrated by AKI Japan. The party in Honour of Satoshi Takeda sensei (Kametake-san) was celebrated Sunday 31/1/2010. Many attended and showed appreciation for the effort filled years of service to the Aikido Networks of his own teacher Takeda Yoshinobu Shihan 8-dan. Kametake-san is a highly motivated advocate for the Aikido of O'Sensei and the Ueshiba Legacy. We are so happy to see his happyness.

Here are some instructions on creating a knotwork tsuba (including a pdf version) for your bokuto, created by Guy Hagen in Florida. Does anyone have photos of a finished tsuba using these instructions that they can post?

Seminar: Frank Ostoff sensei returning to Oberlin, March 4-7th, 2010

Cleveland Aikikai and Oberlin Aikido Club will be hosting Frank Ostoff Sensei, 5th Dan, of Aikido Center of Düsseldorf on March 4-7, 2010 in Oberlin and Cleveland Heights. Ostoff Sensei is returning to Ohio following his last year visit. That event was immensely enjoyed by many aikidoka who came from different states and countries to practice in Oberlin. Ostoff Sensei holistic approach to training mind and body has a broad appeal to students of all ages and affiliations. Our March seminar will be building on that experience and beyond. There will be a special class (space limited) on Thursday, March 4 at 7 p.m. in Cleveland Aikikai dojo at 3965 Mayfield Road, Cleveland Heights, OH 44121. The Oberlin seminar schedule will be as follow: Friday, March 5, 7-9:00 p.m., Saturday, March 6, 10-12 p.m. and 3-5:00 p.m., Sunday, March 7 at 10-12 p.m. The cost of the seminar is $100 for all three days, or $30 per class. Seminar: AWA Kangeiko -- Kiku Matsu Dojo, Chicago, IL 2/4-2/7

A period of intensive training during the deep end of the long winter, Kangeiko is meant to build one’s spirit to face the adversities in life. It is intended to push you to find your spirit and realize the power you have to gracefully conduct your daily life. Instruction will be provided by Andrew Sato, Rokudan, AWA Chief Instructor. Tachi waza, suwari waza, and buki waza will all be covered during the training. Please bring your jo and bokken. Kiku Matsu dojo is located at 4512 N. Lincoln Ave, Chicago IL. Here's a quick mention of aikido in this article entitled "Kirwan tries 'Jedi magic'" wherein Japan's rugby coach John Kirwan will be enlisting "the mystical powers of a 90-year-old aikido mastre whose techniques help petite Japanese nurses lift patients off hospital beds" to help out his team. The article also mentions his efforts to train his team members with sumo wrestlers in the past.
